Romans 1:28
28People did not think it was important to have a true knowledge of God. So God left them and allowed them to have their own worthless thinking and to do things they should not do. (NCV)
Wow, this passage is so frightening! It suggests that when we don’t really like what we know about God and we start to try to reshape God as we wish he were rather than how he is, he gets disgusted with us and stands there as we walk away. As if God is saying, “Ok, if that is what you want to do than do it. But that is not me and in the end it does not lead to life.”
So the question is,“have I tried to reshape God in some way?” Or,” Is there something about God that I don’t like so I try to twist Him to make Him as I want Him to be?” See in the end I need true knowledge of God! I need to know Him as He is because anything but that is not God at all. The worst part is I could reshape God in my heart and mind and make him less offensive and more palatable and perhaps never discover that the God I have created is actually just a god. I may not even know that I walked away from God long ago.
Father, hear my prayer. I am prone to self-deception. As your word says, “the heart is deceived above all else.” Help me know the real you, even the parts that I may wish were different. I don’t always understand you but I need you!
Amen
